
New Delhi: Avni Lekhara has scripted history in Para Shooting at the Paris Paralympics by becoming the first Indian woman to win two Paralympic gold medals.
Avni won the gold medal in the Tokyo Paralympics back in 2020. Now, she defended her gold medal in the Paris Paralympics 2024. Lekhara became the first Paralympic athlete to bring laurels for the country as she won the gold in shooting.
Apart from Avani, her compatriot Mona Agarwal finished third and thereby won the Bronze medal in the same event. Avani has become one of the most decorated Paralympians in the Indian Paralympic history.
Who is Avni Lekhara?
Born in the town of Jaipur, Rajasthan, Avani Lekhara’s journey has been nothing short of an amalgamation of resilience, determination and unwavering pursuit of excellence. After experiencing an unfortunate road accident, Avni became wheelchair-bound for the rest of her life in 2012.
However, her father became a pillar of support for her and helped in both the physical and mental recovery of Avni. Simultaneously, Avni’s father encouraged her to explore sports as a way for her mental rehabilitation. Lekhara was an avid admirer of Abhinav Bindra from a young age. Subsequently, she took up the game of shooting which had given him and the entire country the first individual gold medal.
Meanwhile, she has enrolled herself in a five-year law degree program at the University of Rajasthan. Avani’s shooting career received a watershed moment in 2021, when she made history at the Paralympic Games, becoming the first Indian female Paralympian to win two medals gold and a bronze- in a single event.
