Elon Musk’s high-speed ‘Starlink’ coming to India: Here’s how to pre-order

The ultimate goal of Starlink is to have a 12,000-satellite network that would provide a speed of 1 Gbps in the future.

New Delhi: Elon Musk’s satellite-based internet service is coming to India in 2022. Interested customers can pre-register for a price of $99 (Rs. 7,300). Elon Musk has been sending satellites in the Earth’s orbit for his new ambitious project.

As per the official website, the Starlink internet would reach India by 2022, but the exact timeframe has not been shared yet. During pre-orders, it also seems to cover major cities like Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Hyderabad among others. However, there is no detailed information available on the exact coverage details. Therefore users will have to check whether their areas will be covered or not.

Pre-booking for Starlink is very simple. Users need to head to the official website of Starlink. Then on the homepage, the option to pre-book one is available. Users then have to put in their PIN code, and if their area is being covered, they can click on ‘Order Now’.

They would then be redirected to the page where they will fill in their details and then complete the payment process within a stipulated time. If the process is not completed within the given time, the ordering process will abort and user will be redirected to the homepage.

Right now, the deposit fee is $99, or about Rs 7,300, which is for the equipment that the users would get and needs to be installed to get the internet connection. At the moment, Starlink is under beta testing and therefore, connections are limited.

The connection will be provided on a first-come-first-served basis. Once the user has made the payment, their priority access in their location gets locked. The pre-booking is fully refundable, allowing users to change their decision at a later stage. Payment can be done by Debit and Credit cards.

Internet Speed

SpaceX has already launched over 1,000 satellites, for ‘Starlink’ project. Currently, Starlink is providing an internet speed ranging between 50 Mbps and 150 Mbps during its beta testing along with a latency between 20 ms to 40 ms. The speed would be doubled to reach 300 Mbps, in 2021 itself. The latency will also be reduced to 20 ms, Elon Musk has said, “The ultimate goal of Starlink is to have a 12,000-satellite network that would provide a speed of 1 Gbps in the future.”

Starlink is a revolutionary project for the world because it aims to provide such high-speed internet not just in urban areas, but also in rural and remote areas where present broadband services usually fail to reach or are not available.
