Google takes down viral Indian App that allowed users to ‘remove China apps’

‘Remove China Apps’ allowed users to search, identify and remove Chinese apps from their mobile.

New Delhi: Amid the simmering tension at the Indo-China border over latter’s aggression and intrusion in Ladakh, a Google App named ‘Remove China Apps’ became hugely popular in India and was downloaded by lakhs of people.

The same was pulled down from Play Store by Google for alleged violation of “Google Play Policy”.

The developer of the app — Jaipur based OneTouchAppLabs — took to Twitter to announce that the app has been suspended from Play store. However, even the firm didn’t confirm why the app has been removed.

‘Remove China Apps’ allowed users to search, identify and remove Chinese apps from their mobile. It was fairly easy to download from Google Playstore and after that it would easily identify popular Chinese Apps like TikTok, ShareIt, UC Browser, and CamScanner. The app also lets users decide which Chinese app they want to keep or remove.

Remove China Apps made its debut on the Google Play store on May 17 and was downloaded over 50 lakh times before getting pulled, as per data from Google Play.

While new users won’t be able to download ‘Remove China Apps’ from Google Play but those who have already downloaded can continue to use it.

Earlier, Google pulled down Mitron from Play Store

Google received another App called Mitron, few days back. It was dubbed as an Indian alternative to Chinese App TikTok. It was even downloaded by over 5 million users before being removed by Google.

According to a CNBC TV 18 report, the tech giant “red-flagged the app and decided to suspend it for violating its ‘spam and minimum functionality’ policy”.

“Another clause of the policy mentions a ‘repetitive content’, which means ‘copying content from other apps without adding any original content or value’ amounts to a violation,” the report further stated.
