New Delhi: Microsoft Corp is in discussions with Discord, a social media company popular with gamers, to acquire the chat software for over $10 billion. according to online reports.
Discord has reached out to potential buyers and has also held discussions with Amazon and Epic Games in the past, the report said. It is also likely to be said that it was more likely to go public than sell itself.
According to a report by Venture Beat, Discord is exploring a sale and is in final talks with a party. The reality is the company is doing really well. I don’t see a reason they would want to sell. They seem to be completely in control of their destiny right now, ” the source said.
Discord, which is valued at around $7 billion as of last December and the Xbox maker has been seeking to strengthen its video game offerings with $7.5 billion acquisition of ZeniMax Media last year.
The COVID-19 pandemic has boosted the gaming companies as users stayed at home and opted for video games for entertainment during lockdowns. As per Wall Street Journal, Discord has around 140 million monthly users. The software is free for most users, but the company generates revenue through Nitro subscriptions that give more advanced features like higher resolution screen sharing, extra sticker packs, and larger upload limits.
