“I want to take a moment to say thank you to all the teachers, education officials and others who are doing everything they can to keep their kids and their communities informed during the COVID-19 outbreak,” wrote Ms Sandberg, 50, in a post that was shared on Facebook.

What Sheryl Sandberg wrote in FB post:

I want to take a moment to say thank you to all the teachers, education officials and others who are doing everything they can to keep their kids and their communities informed during the COVID-19 outbreak.

It isn’t easy. School systems are complex and public officials, teachers and school administrators need access to facts and evidence-based advice to protect the thousands of children in their care. This is about more than keeping children safe – which is vital by itself – it is also about turning kids into advocates for doing the right thing at home and in their communities.

In the state of Gujarat in India, there are more than 100,000 educators across thousands of schools using Workplace from Facebook to share videos, infographics and news in real time – everything from the latest government advice to videos like the one in the picture, showing how to encourage children to wash their hands. We are also working with their Department of Education to plan a live session to help them keep people informed.

Where schools have had to close their doors, we are seeing teachers use creative ways to keep in touch with their kids and communities. At the Istituto Quarto Sassuolo Ovest in northern Italy, which operates three schools that have been closed for several weeks, the Dean is using its Facebook page to share important information and advice for parents, including the best ways to explain what is going on to their children.

And in Thailand, Kirsten Durward started the group Educator Temporary School Closure for Online Learning to help teachers and others around the world during school closures. It is growing rapidly with more than 45,000 people so far coming together to crowdsource curriculum ideas and share resources. The group is also focused on making sure those who are on their own feel connected to educators everywhere.

Teachers are such heroes. Thank you!
