Nice [France]: The death toll from a knife attack in the city of Nice now stands at three, the French Police said on Thursday. Officials reportedly said that a man wielding a knife slit the throat of one person and injured several others. Later reports said two more had died, taking the toll to three.
“There was a knife attack, two people were killed. The suspected attacker was detained,” the police wrote on Twitter as quoted by Sputnik.
Unconfirmed reports said one of the victims, a woman, was decapitated by the attacker.
Nice’s mayor, Christian Estrosi, who described the attack as terrorism, said on Twitter it had happened in or near the city’s Notre Dame church.
According to Sputnik, Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi wrote on Twitter that the police quickly detained the attacker.
Estrosi said the attacker had repeatedly shouted the phrase “Allahu Akbar”, or God is greatest, even after he had been detained by police.

He also qualified the incident as a possible terrorist attack.
