New Delhi: The Red Door is the fifth and, presumably, last instalment in the ‘Insidious’ film series. As the conclusion of a horror series, this one does a decent job of wrapping up the Lamberts’ journey.

After wrapping in August 2022, the film premiered in theatres on July 7, 2023. The Central Board of Film Certification in India has given Patrick Wilson’s film a U/A censorship rating.

Similar to previous theatrical releases, this film will be available on Netflix. The film has not been given an official release date yet, but it will likely debut on OTT platforms towards the beginning of December.

Plot

The film follows Josh Lambert’s son Dalton as he prepares for his next chapter as a college student. But as his suppressed demons from the past begin to surface, things become very difficult for him. Josh and Dalton, determined to put a stop to the chaos, decide to go beyond the iconic red door, beyond which lurk horrific terrors.

Review

Director and franchise star Patrick Wilson does as fantastic a job as we could have imagined with the emotional beats of these troubled characters. However, he is never able to reach the franchise’s potential for horror. Perhaps his familiarity with the character stops him from going to any extremes.

Wilson made his directorial debut with a property he is familiar with, and the tense situation but ultimately loving relationship between the two leads is a smart choice. Some amusing frat party scenes are just two examples of how he uses humour to break up the terror.

Story-wise, the viewers need to have seen the prior two films to understand the stakes and the means of resistance. Entering the climax, our protagonists have just a vague idea of what has to be done and what precisely is torturing them, which undermines the tension. There are some great gross-out moments and creeping scares, but they are generally predictable, and the pacing is rather languid until a sudden rush to the conclusion.

Although it has its share of flaws—after all, every film does—the film is, on the whole, a success.
