Uproar over Vir Das’s ‘I Come From 2 Indias’ Monologue, complaints lodged over ‘derogatory’ remarks

Vir Das on Tuesday issued a statement clarifying that his comments in the monologue were not intended to insult the nation.

New Delhi: Actor, comedian Vir Das courted controversy for allegedly making anti-India comments in his monologue ‘I come from two Indias’, which he delivered as part of his performance in the US.

On Monday, Das uploaded a video on YouTube, titled “I come from two Indias”, in pretext of his recent performance at the John F Kennedy Centre in Washington DC.

In the six-minute video, Das could be seen talking about some major issues in the country such as COVID-19 pandemic, rape incidents, farmer protest and more.

A section of his monologue is going viral viral on the Indian side of social media where the comedian can be seen saying, “I come from an India where we worship women during the day and gang-rape them during the night”.

Das was ruthlessly criticized and trolled over social media for generalizing rape incidents in India, while some came in to support his stand.

However, Vir Das on Tuesday issued a statement clarifying that his comments in the monologue were not intended to insult the nation.

The 42-year-old took to Twitter and posted a note that read, “The video is a satire about the duality of two very separate India”s that do different things. Like any nation has light and dark, good and evil within it. None of this is a secret. The video appeals for us to never forget that we are great. To never stop focusing on what makes us great”.

“It ends in a gigantic patriotic round of applause for a country we all love, believe in, and are proud of. That there is more to our country than the headlines, a deep beauty. That’s the point of the video and the reason for the applause,” his statement read.

Meanwhile, complaint was lodged against him at the Tilak Marg police station in New Delhi, accusing him of using derogatory language against the nation.

Another complaint has been filed by Advocate Ashutosh Dubey in Mumbai.
