A Perfect Replica: Union Minister puts facts on Ashoka Emblem, counters Opposition charges

Many leaders tweeted the pictures of Ashoka Lions and said that ‘peaceful lions’ have been replaced with ‘angry lions’

New Delhi: Amid the escalating row over Ashoka Emblem atop new Parliament complex, the Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has sought to set the records straight by putting facts in the public domain and counter the canard spread by Opposition parties.

After the 9,500 kg Ashoka Emblem was unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a special ceremony, the opposition parties have been accusing the Centre of fiddling with the national symbol and altering with its basic structure for political gains. They also accused the Prime Minister of making it a ‘personal show’ rather than a ceremony of national importance.

Many leaders tweeted the pictures of Ashoka Lions at the Parliament Complex and said that ‘peaceful lions’ have been replaced with ‘angry lions’ while others said that angry lions with bared fangs doesn’t represent ‘True India’.

Minister’s counter to Opposition’s canards

Countering the charges, Housing & Urban Affairs Minister said that the National Emblem is an exact replica of that of Sarnath.

“The original Sarnath Emblem is 1.6 metre high whereas the emblem on top of the New Parliament is huge at 6.5 metre high,” he tweeted.

The artists who created this structure also said that the difference in view of Sarnath & Parliament could have been because of the height in Emblem.

“The ‘experts’ should also know that the original placed in Sarnath is at ground level while the new emblem is at a height of 33 mtrs from ground,” Hardeep Puri tweeted.

The minister further said that if one looks at the Sarnath emblem form below, it would look as as calm or angry as the one being discussed.
