Bihar DGP Gupteshwar Pandey takes voluntary retirement, likely to contest Assembly polls

Bihar DGP Gupteshwar Pandey takes VRS, may join politics. The top cop landed in controversy when he took an ‘aukat’ jibe at Rhea Chakraborty in Sushant death probe over the jurisdiction tussle between Bihar and Maharashtra Police.

New Delhi: Bihar Director General of Police (DGP) Gupteshwar Pandey has taken voluntary retirement from service and his resignation has reportedly been accepted by Governor Phagu Chauhan.

Pandey is likely to contest the forthcoming Assembly polls from Buxar, sources said. He has reportedly been assured a ticket from the BJP.

Gupteshwar Pandey, the 1987 batch IPS officer will be known for his pro-active approach in taking up probe into Sushant Singh Rajput death case. While the case dragged in Mumbai for days and months, he was the one who reportedly suggested Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for filing a case in Bihar and following up the matter with Maharashtra Police. In days to come, Sushant case became prime time news and he became a much-sought after tough cop, seeking justice for Bihari hero.

Bihar’s top cop landed in controversy when he took an ‘aukat’ jibe at Rhea Chakraborty over the jurisdiction tussle between Bihar and Maharashtra Police.

Reports say Pandey has decided to join politics after a go-ahead from Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, however the top cop denied joining any political party.

“I have not joined any political party as of now and I have not taken any decision on it yet. As far as social work is concerned, I can do it without entering politics too,” Pandey said.

Notably, in 2014 also, Pandey had requested for voluntary retirement as he was taking the political plunge, expecting a ticket from BJP.

However, he did not get a ticket and 9 months after taking VRS, Pandey requested the Bihar government to allow him to withdraw his resignation.

His request was accepted by the Nitish government and the top cop joined again. He was elevated as DGP of Bihar Police just before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
