CBI takes over probe into Hathras case from UP police

CBI takes up Hathras probe: The UP police and government came under heavy criticism over its handling of the case as the victim was cremated at night while her family members were locked inside their homes.

New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday took over the investigation into the Hathras case, where a 19-year-old girl was allegedly gangraped by 4 upper caste men.

A 19-year-old Dalit woman had succumbed to her injuries at Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital on September 29 after being assaulted and allegedly gang-raped on September 14. The brutal murder of the girl triggered nationwide outcry.

The UP police and government came under heavy criticism over its handling of the case as the victim was cremated at night while her family members were locked inside their homes. This shoddy treatment of young woman’s traumatized family created mass outrage with even BJP leaders demanding that heads must roll in the police department.

Uttar Pradesh government recommended a CBI probe in the Hathras incident, days ago and also filed an affidavit in Supreme Court over the same. SIT team formed by Yogi govt is probing the matter and is likely to submit its report soon.
