Chandrayaan-3 leaves Earth orbit, now on its way to Moon: ISRO

New Delhi: The Indian Space Research Organization stated late Monday night (July 31, 2023) that Chandrayaan-3, which was launched successfully from Sriharikota two weeks ago, has completed its orbit around the earth and is now heading towards the moon to begin the next part of the mission. The lunar injection occurred between midnight and 12.30 a.m. on Monday, according to official confirmation.

After entering the translunar orbit, ISRO announced the news through Twitter, “Chandrayaan-3 Mission:

Chandrayaan-3 completes its orbits around the Earth and heads towards the Moon.

A successful perigee-firing performed at ISTRAC, ISRO has injected the spacecraft into the translunar orbit.

Next stop: the Moon 🌖

As it arrives at the moon, the Lunar-Orbit Insertion (LOI) is planned for Aug 5, 2023.”

An ISRO representative told PTI that the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft has left Earth orbit and was on a trajectory that would eventually bring it within close proximity to the Moon after undergoing trans-lunar injection (TLI) on Tuesday. After the TLI manoeuvre on Tuesday, which put the spacecraft on a lunar transfer trajectory, away from Earth’s orbit, the spacecraft started its voyage to the Moon. The lander’s gentle landing on the moon’s surface was scheduled on August 23 per ISRO’s announcement.

About Chandrayaan 3

The purpose of Chandrayaan-3, the mission’s follow-up, is to show that the whole process of landing and exploring the moon’s surface is safe. ISRO’s Launch Vehicle Mark-3 (previously known as the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mk-III), successfully lofted Chandrayaan-3 into orbit on July 14 in the afternoon. India will become the fourth nation to land on the moon’s surface and the first to achieve a gentle landing near the lunar south pole when its spacecraft successfully touches down after a 40-day journey.
