Deaf & mute children, target of religious conversion gang; received funding from Pak’s ISI

Umar along with his other associates operated a syndicate in Jamia Nagar with the sole purpose of converting non-Muslims into Islam.

New Delhi: Uttar Pradesh Police’s Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) busted a religious conversion racket by arresting 2 people accused of forcefully converting religions of people. The accused have been identified as Mufti Qazi Jahangir Qasmi and Mohammad Umar Gautam. Both are residents of Jamia Nagar in South Delhi.

The duo was apparently involved in coercively converting around 1000 people to Islam. Deaf and mute individuals along with women and children constituted their main target.

Uttar Pradesh ADG (Law and order) Prashant Kumar said they had evidence that the racket was being funded from abroad.

“Both were arrested after interrogation. We have got important evidence, documents of foreign funding,” he said at a press conference.

Conversion gang’s modus operandi


According to police, Umar Gautam himself had embraced Islam. He is a resident of Batla house in Jamia Nagar. Umar Gautam was arrested following three rounds of questioning after which it had emerged that he had secured funding from international sources.

Umar along with his other associates operated a syndicate in Jamia Nagar with the sole purpose of converting non-Muslims into Islam.

Their main target was deaf, mute individuals, children and women.

The deaf and mute individuals were particularly chosen from a residential school in Noida. They were converted to Islam with promises of marriage, jobs and some other factors and their families were consciously kept unaware of these developments.

UP ADG (Law and Order) Prashant Kumar, speaking to press said, “Umar Gautam is himself a convert and resides in Batla House, Jamia Nagar. He has converted 1,000 persons till now. Was acting at the behest of Pakistan’s ISI,” Kumar said.

“The accused were using enticement, provocation and deceit to convert people apart from creating distrust and promoting enmity among different communities,” he added.
