ED raids 6 locations in Delhi, UP in religious conversion case; probes money laundering

The places searched include the office of Islamic Dawah Centre (IDC), residences of the main accused Mohd Umar Gautam, and his associate Mufti Qazi Jahangir Qasmi, located in Jamia Nagar, Delhi.

New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Saturday conducted raids at 6 places in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh in connection with religious conversion case of hearing impaired and deaf students and poor people into Islam, apparently with help of foreign funding.

ED said in a statement that searches were conducted at three locations each in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.

The places searched include the office of Islamic Dawah Centre (IDC), residences of the main accused Mohd Umar Gautam, and his associate Mufti Qazi Jahangir Qasmi, located in Jamia Nagar, Delhi.

In UP, the ED has conducted searches at offices of Al Hassan Education and Welfare Foundation and Guidance Education and Welfare Society located at Lucknow.

The searches came after ED registered criminal case under Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) based on an FIR registered by the UP ATS. The UP ATS had arrested 6 people, allegedly running the religious conversion racket in garb of social service.

On June 21, UP ATS had arrested 2 clerics from Delhi – Mufti Kazi Jahageer Alam Qasmi and Mohammad Umar Gautam for running Islamic Dawah Centre (IDC), the organisation which apparently worked for carrying out large-scale conversions into Islam.
