New Delhi: Government of Meghalaya has denied harassment of Bengali citizens in the state, said Ministry of Home Affairs in Lok Sabha.

This statement comes after Ministry of Home Affairs said some inputs have been received alleging harassment of non-tribals in some of the northeastern states by tribal pressure groups in Lok Sabha.

Recent attacks on Non-Tribals in Meghalaya

Recently, over 15-20 masked miscreants, armed with sharp and blunt weapons, attacked the eight men from Assam’s South Salmara-Mankachar district bordering Bangladesh when they were sleeping inside the St. Xavier College complex in Shait-Shait Umriod village in South West Khasi Hills district.

Last year, six non-tribal boys were attacked by a mob when they had gone to play basketball in Lawsohtun, Shillong.

Also, the Bengali community residing along Majai area which falls under the Shella-Bholaganj Block in East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya has earlier refuted allegations of being mistreated and harassed by the local populace.

“All Meghalaya Bengalis are Bangladeshis” Posters in the state

For example, posters with messages like “All Meghalaya Bengalis are Bangladeshis” and “Khasiland for Khasis; Foreigners Go Away” were put up in state capital Shillong, one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the northeast.

They were later removed by the police who tweeted, “It is hereby informed that banners that were displayed today in public places, have been removed. We request all concerned to kindly co-operate with us in promoting peace and harmony in the state.”

This is a developing story.
