Haryana man, Vishal Jood jailed in Australia for assault on Sikhs; Deported to India

Vishal Jood, hailing from Haryana has been deported from Australia to India after being arrested for assaulting Sikhs, causing polarisation within the community.

New Delhi: A Haryana man named Vishal Jood has been deported to India after serving a jail sentence in Australia for assaulting Sikhs, tweeted the country’s immigration and citizenship minister. The 25-year-old had been held in an Australian prison after he attacked the Sikhs. The incident led to polarisation within the community.

The Haryana resident went to Australia for studies and was convicted in September 2020 after he was charged with ‘assault,’ occasioning actual bodily harm in the company of others, and armed with the intention to commit an indictable offense. He was sentenced to 12 months in jail and was on parole for six months.

Vishal Jood claimed that he was upholding the sanctity of the Indian flag and he was targeting only suspected pro-Khalistan Sikhs thus raising anti-India slogans in Sydney.

In June, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar asked the Australian authorities to release Vishal. Supporters of Vishal came down to the street to protest against his arrest. They said that pro-Khalistani elements involved Vishal in false cases.
