New Delhi: Starting May 12, the students of Madrassas in Uttar Pradesh will have to recite the National Anthem along with morning prayers, the state Madrassa Education Board said in an order issued today.

The decision to make National Anthem in UP madrassas was taken sometime ago and notification to this effect was issued by the Board on May 9. Now onwards, students and teachers will be required to recite the National Anthem before going to their classes.

The Board, in the notification, said that the students must sing “Jan Gan Man Adhinayak Jaya he, Bharat Bhagya Vidhata….. jaya he, jaya he, jaya he, Jaya jaya jaya, jaya he!” on regular basis.

UP madrassa

The decision to this effect was taken at the UP Madrassa board meeting a month ago but its implementation was delayed because schools were closed on account of Ramzan.

This comes almost five years after the singing of National Anthem and unfurling of tricolour was made mandatory in madrassas, on the occasion of Independence Day.

The purpose behind mandatory recital was taken to inculcate feeling of patriotism in minority-run institutions. Lot many schools already have this practice where students sing national anthem with morning prayers.

In 2018, Madrassa licence was revoked

In August 2018, the Yogi government had revoked the registration of a madrassa in Maharajganj district after a video of cleric went viral. In the video clip, he was seen barring the students from singing the national anthem on Independence Day. He could be heard saying that it was not ‘permissible’ in Islam. He was then seen asking students to sing ‘Saar Jahan se Accha’. Though, teachers expressed reservations but the cleric was insistent on preventing recital of National Anthem by students.

After probe report, the madrassa was derecognized & its license cancelled. The cleric was also arrested on charges of sedition and disrespecting the national anthem.
