Makeshift Covid hospitals needed in near future: Centre tells SC in affidavit

The number of cases of COVID are “constantly increasing and at some point of time in near future, apart from existing hospitals, a large number of temporary make-shift hospitals will have to be created in order to accommodate COVID-19 patients,”, the Centre said.

New Delhi: The Centre on Thursday filed an affidavit in Supreme Court on the current Coronavirus situation in the country and admitted that the Covid-19 numbers are likely to surge significantly in near future.

Temporary makeshift hospitals will be need to set up in ‘near future’ to deal with the Covid crisis, the Centre said.

“The number of cases of COVID are “constantly increasing and at some point of time in near future, apart from existing hospitals, a large number of temporary make-shift hospitals will have to be created in order to accommodate COVID-19 patients requiring admission, medical care and treatment”, said the Centre’s affidavit submitted to court.

The Centre also said that it would create an “optimum infrastructure” and “adequately address human resource issue for this envisaged surge capacity scenario”.

“Conserving health care workforce is the need of the hour in order to cater to the anticipated patient load in the hour of distress,” it added.

Petition sought special quarantine facility for doctors

The government was responding to a PIL filed in the top court by Dr Aarushi Jain asking the government to take steps for the protection of doctors and other health workers who are in the forefront of fighting COVID-19.

The petition had sought special quarantine facilities for all doctors to prevent the spread of infection to their friends and families.

Meanwhile, the Coronavirus count today spiked by 9,304 cases pushing the total tally to 2,16,919.
