Over 2 lakh stranded migrants ferried in 145 special trains on Thursday

The ministry added: “As on 14th May 2020, a total of 800 “Shramik Special” trains have been operationalized from various states across the country. More than 10 Lacs passengers have reached their home State.”

New Delhi: The Indian Railways operated 145 ‘Shramik Special’ trains on Thursday and ferried home close to 2.10 lakh migrants stranded in various parts of the country amid the coronavirus-induced lockdown, officials said.

“Yesterday 145 Shramik trains were operated and nearly 2.10 lakh passengers were ferried home. As of 9 am today (Friday), 999 Shramik Specials approved, said the Ministry of railways

The ministry added: “As on 14th May 2020, a total of 800 “Shramik Special” trains have been operationalized from various states across the country. More than 10 Lacs passengers have reached their home State.”

These 800 trains were terminated in various states like Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Mizoram, Odisha, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal.

Special Shramik trains

Several states and Union territories/ district administrations have operationalized certain activities ensuring strict compliance with the lockdown guidelines after the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) order dated April 15.

The Indian Railways has started to run Shramik Special trains to transport the stranded migrant workers, students, pilgrims and tourists back to their native places. (ANI)
