New Delhi: July 27 marks the death anniversary of the 11th president of our country, APJ Abdul Kalam. Dr.Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam was born and raised in the south Indian coastal town of Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu. He dedicated himself to developing ballistic missile and launch vehicle technology.

Whether it was his career in science or politics, APJ Abdul Kalam inspires people across the world. Fondly called India’s ‘Missile man’, Dr Kalam was particularly close to young people and he loved to be among students.

Dr Kalam was a pioneer in developing the country’s missile projects. In 1997, he received the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in India. He is a recipient of several other awards including the Padma Bhushan (1981) and the Padma Vibhushan (1990). In 2002, Dr Kalam became the 11th President of India. But he always referred to himself as a teacher first.

After taking a discharge from his duties as the President of India, Kalam went back to his passion. It was during delivering a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management in Shillong, when he collapsed and died from an apparent cardiac arrest. India lost one of its visionary leaders on July 27, 2015, at the age of 83.
