SC orders Mukhtar Ansari’s transfer from Punjab to UP jail, Yogi govt had filed plea in court

The Supreme Court accepted the arguments of UP government that Mukhtar Ansari’s presence was necessary for the criminal trials in the state and dismissed his plea that he would be “in danger in UP”.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday ordered the transfer of gangster turned legislator Mukhtar Ansari from Punjab jail to Uttar Pradesh prison within 2 weeks. The court has grated two weeks time to shift Ansari from Rupnagar jail in Punjab to Banda jail in Uttar Pradesh.

The Bench headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan directed that Ansari would be handed over to the custody of State of Uttar Pradesh within two weeks.

“It is directed that Mukhtar Ansari is handed over to the custody of UP within 2 weeks. He shall be lodged in Banda Jail. Jail Superintendent of Banda jail will extend medical facilities,” the Bench said.

The Supreme Court order comes as a blow to Mukhtar Ansari, a five-time MLA from Mau, who has over 30 criminal cases in his name.

Now, a court in UP will now decide whether the don turned MLA will be housed at the Allahabad jail or Banda jail.

Mukhtar Ansari had been lodged in various jails in Uttar Pradesh since 2015 for various criminal cases before he was shifted to Punjab.

In writ petition, UP govt said that Ansari was wanted for trial in various grave offences in the state and Punjab was shielding him in Ropar jail on medical grounds.
