
New Delhi: Uttar Pradesh police shot dead gangster Vikas Dubey in an encounter which broke out after the Special Task Force (STF) vehicle bringing him back from Madhya Pradesh to Kanpur turned turtle. STF officials said that Vikas Dubey tried to escape after the vehicle overturned early in the morning.

The encounter broke out after a police vehicle carrying Vikas Dubey from Ujjain to Kanpur met with an accident and the gangster attempted to escape. Taking advantage of the accident, Vikas Dubey got out of the vehicle, snatched a pistol from an STF personnel and attempted to flee. The police said that Vikas Dubey was asked to surrender. He did not and shot at the UP STF team.
Following this, the police surrounded him from all four sides and tried to make him surrender, but he fired at them. In self-defence, police fired bullets at him.

7:45 am: Gangster declared brought dead by doctors
Vikas Dubey was taken to Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital or Hallett Hospital in Kanpur but was declared brought dead.

A video taken at around 6.30 AM, just half an hour before the encounter, showed media cars chasing the convoy being stopped.

Dubey, in his 50s, had over 60 criminal cases against him, including murder, kidnapping and extortion. His alleged links with the police and politicians helped him stay out of jail for years.
There were 62 criminal cases lodged against Dubey in Uttar Pradesh, including five cases of murder and eight cases of attempt to murder.
The gangster was arrested from Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh on Thursday after a six-day hunt. He was being brought to Kanpur from Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh on Friday morning when the encounter erupted.
