UP man kills himself after boss allegedly asked to “send wife for a night”, case filed

Junior engineer Nagendra Kumar and a clerk have been suspended yet while the police have also registered a case against them

New Delhi: An employee of the Uttar Pradesh power department killed himself by suicide after he was allegedly asked to “send his wife for a night” by his senior if he wanted to get a transfer.

The 45-year-old Gokul Prasad was enraged and felt humiliated, after which he set himself on fire outside the junior engineer’s office in Lakhimpur.

Prasad was rushed to the nearby hospital where he was declared dead on Sunday.

In a video that surfaced online after the incident, Prasad can be seen in extreme pain as he explains what made him take such a harsh step. Prasad alleged that the junior engineer and one of his aides were harassing him for past some time. He further said that he even approached the police in the matter but received no help.

Junior engineer Nagendra Kumar and a clerk have been suspended yet while the police have also registered a case against them.

In another video, his wife alleges, “He went into depression, started taking medication, but they did not spare him. He was transferred to Aliganj and was facing difficulty in traveling. So he asked for a transfer closer home. They told him, ‘get your wife to sleep with us and we will get you transferred”.

Senior police officer Sanjiv Suman said, “The lineman had alleged that the junior engineer used to demand money and made vulgar statements when he sought a transfer. We have registered a case. At the department level, the junior engineer has been suspended and an inquiry ordered. The case has been registered under the abetment to suicide charge.”
