Who is Margaret Alva, picked by opposition to take on Jagdeep Dhankar in vice-president poll?

Congress-led opposition parties on Sunday announced that former Union Minister Margaret Alva will fight the vice-president election against NDA’s candidate Jagdeep Dhankar.

New Delhi: Congress-led opposition parties on Sunday announced that former Union Minister Margaret Alva will fight the vice-president election against NDA’s candidate Jagdeep Dhankar. The election for the post is scheduled to be held on August 6. The announcement was made by NCP chief Sharad Pawar in Delhi.

Notably, the development came just a day after the BJP-led NDA revealed West Bengal Governor Dhankar’s name in the election. Ahead of the election, we are going to tell you about Margaret Alva below here:

Who is Margret Alva?

Alva was born in Karnataka’s Mangalore on 14 April 1942 in a Roman Catholic family. She completed her BA from Mount Carmel College of Bangaluru. Later, she completed a law degree from Government Law College, Bengaluru. She married Niranjan Alva in 1964 who died in the year 2018.

She made her way into politics by winning a Rajya Sabha seat on a Congress ticket in 1974 from Karnataka. She continued to be elected to the upper house in 1980, 1986, and 1992.

In the lower house of Parliament, Alva was elected for the Uttara Kannada constituency in the 1999 Lok Sabha election.

In the Congress government in 1984, she held the post of Parliamentary Affairs in the Ministery of state. She also served as the Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions.

She also served as the Governor of Goa, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand. In Congress, she bestowed her service as joint secretary and as general secretary of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee.
