BCCI to announce squad for cricket world cup at 1.30 PM, all eyes on KL Rahul

The provisional squad for the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 will be announced by BCCI today, i.e. September 5.

New Delhi: Team India’s hunt for the first ICC trophy in a decade will officially begin with the announcement of a provisional 15-member squad today.

BCCI selection committee Chief Ajit Agarkar flew to Sri Lanka last week to discuss about their desired team combination for the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup 2023, later this year in India.

The announcement will likely be made by Agarkar alone, who is scheduled to meet the press at 01:30 p.m. IST today.

The team is likely to be almost the same team that has been sent to Sri Lanka for the Asia Cup 2023, with a few minor changes to be expected.

The team which is currently taking part in the Asia Cup consist of a 17-member squad, but for the World Cup, BCCI has to submit a 15-member squad, two fewer members than their current squad.

Fast bowler Prasidh Krishna and the left arm pinch hitter Tilak Varma are likely to be getting axed from the team. Travelling reserve Sanju Samson is also on the list of names that will most likely not be added to the final squad.

The biggest question for BCCI is going to be whether to include the injury-prone KL Rahul or not. KL Rahul was given a place in the squad directly after returning from injury, which also drew a lot of criticism from the fans.

Notably, Rahul was again sidelined from the first two matches of the Asia Cup due to a niggle. Considering the injury woes team India is suffering for sometimes, a few travelling reserves might be named to travel alongside the original squad.

Team India’s squad travelling for Asia Cup 2023:

Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya (VC), Ravindra Jadeja, Ishan Kishan, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Md. Shami, Md. Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav, Prasidh Krishna.
