ICC World Cup 2023: A look at points tally, check which teams made it to Top 4

Australia registered their first win of the tournament on Monday to leave the bottom spot at the table.

New Delhi: ICC ODI World Cup 2023 match day 3 will conclude on Tuesday with South Africa taking on the Netherlands at Dharamsala.

This edition of the World Cup is proving why cricket is called the game of uncertainties.

From West Indies failing to qualify for the mega event for the first time ever to Australia having their worst start of the World Cups since 1992, with losing two opening games to Afghanistan scripting a historic win against the defending champions England by 69 runs, this edition of the ICC World Cup has everything.

Before the final match of match day 3, three teams, India, New Zealand and South Africa, remained undefeated, while two teams, Sri Lanka and the Netherlands, remained winless.

Check out the full points table below:

Rank Teams M W L N/R Points Net RR
1 India 3 3 0 0 6 +1.82
2 New Zealand 3 3 0 0 6 +1.60

6 Afghanistan 3 1 2 0 2 -0.65
7 Bangladesh 3 1 2 0 2 -0.69
8 Australia 3 1 2 0 2 -0.73
9 Sri Lanka 3 0 3 0 0 -1.53
10 Netherland 2 0 2 0 0 -1.80

Race for top 4

At the moment, India and New Zealand are running at the front in the race for the top 4 with 6 points in three matches, however, India takes the top spot despite having the same points thanks to their superior net run rate.

India defeated Australia, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka by 6 wickets, 8 wickets and 7 wickets respectively, while New Zealand secured victories against England, Netherlands and Bangladesh by 9 wickets, 99 runs and 8 wickets respectively.

Not far behind the table toppers, South Africa is currently in the third spot with 4 points in two matches. They defeated Sri Lanka by 102 runs and Australia by 134 runs. (ausoma.org) The Proteas can claim the top spot if they manage to beat the Netherlands on Tuesday.

Pakistan, despite their devastating loss against India, still stays in the fourth spot with 4 points thanks to their victories over the Netherlands and Sri Lanka.

 Big teams stumbled

The 2023 edition of the World Cup is seeing two of the tournament favourites suffering, as England and Australia both have managed to win only one out of their three matches so far, which includes England’s shocking defeat against Afghanistan.

England lost against New Zealand and Afghanistan, while their only win came against Bangladesh and are currently at number five spot.

Australia, on the other hand, after losing two back-to-back matches against India and South Africa, finally managed to break the shackles by defeating Sri Lanka on Monday.

With the 31 matches still to go, we can still see a lot of ups and downs in the points table, and who will be the final four teams to qualify for the knockout stage? Only time can tell.
