South Africa withdraws from ODI series against Australia to play T20 league

As only the top eight teams from the 12 ICC full member nations plus the Netherlands qualify for the 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup, South Africa has hurt its chances to qualify.

New Delhi: South Africa has withdrawn from the 3-match ODI series against Australia. The series was supposed to be held in mid-January 2023. The decision has been taken in the wake of the new franchise T20 cricket league clashing with the ODI series.

The series was to be held from 12-17 January in Australia. Cricket South Africa (CSA) had asked Cricket Australia (CA) to reconsider the dates of the three matches as they clash with their new franchise T20 league, but CA announced on July 13 that they have been unable to find alternative dates to reschedule the series. Following this, the South African cricket team announced that they would not be playing the ODI series. However, these 3 ODI games were originally scheduled to happen in 2020 but got postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As a result of South Africa’s withdrawal, Cricket Australia reallocated some of their games. The T20I game against the West Indies on October 7 has been moved from Metricon Stadium to the Gabba, while the first match of the T20I series against England on October 9 has been shifted to Perth Stadium from Gabba. Also, the Commonwealth Bank Women’s T20I against Pakistan will be now played in the Blundstone Arena on January 26, instead of Manuka Oval on January 27.

As only the top eight teams from the 12 ICC full member nations plus the Netherlands qualify for the 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup, South Africa has hurt its chances to qualify. The Proteas currently stand at the 11th spot with 49 points. The 5 teams that do not qualify will have to play off against five Associate sides for the remaining two spots in the World Cup.

South Africa’s remaining Super League matches before the May cut-off date are against England and India. The Proteas will play 3 ODIs against England in July 2022.
