Ankhi Das, Facebook’s public policy head for India, steps down

Ankhi Das’ resignation comes weeks after she was questioned internally from employees over how political content was allegedly being regulated in its biggest market, India. Facebook has more than 300 million users in India alone.

New Delhi: Ankhi Das, Facebook’s India head of public policy has stepped down days after controversy over regulating political content. She was in the eye of storm over alleged bias in blocking of hate content on the social media platform.

“Ankhi has decided to step down from her role in Facebook to pursue her interest in public service. Ankhi was one of our earliest employees in India and played an instrumental role in the growth of the company and its services over the last 9 years,” Ajit Mohan, Managing Director India of Facebook, said in an e-mailed statement.

Ankhi Das’ resignation comes weeks after she was questioned internally from employees over how political content was allegedly being regulated in its biggest market, India. Facebook has more than 300 million users in India alone.

Ankhi Das was also called by a Joint Committee of Parliament last week, where she was quizzed about political content on the social media platform.

She was questioned for two hours. The panel also asked how much tax the social media giant pays in India

Why the storm over Ankhi Das

In August, Wall Street Journal said in a report that the conduct of Ankhi Das in last few years revealed her leanings towards the BJP and also her messages were critical of main opposition Congress.

Das, in one of the messages posted, a day before Narendra Modi-led BJP swept to power in the 2014 General Elections, wrote: “We lit a fire to his social media campaign and the rest is of course history.”
