CBI raids Chidambarams’ properties and arrests Karti in a bribe-for-visas case

The corporation intended to send certain personnel to India in excess of the Ministry of Home Affairs’ limit.

New Delhi: The CBI conducted nationwide searches at several locations associated to former Union finance and home minister P Chidambaram and his son Karti in connection with a new corruption investigation filed against the latter. Raids were carried out in nine locations throughout Chennai, Mumbai, Karnataka, Punjab, and Odisha, according to agency sources. According to reports, the new first information report (FIR) is based on claims that Karti took a bribe of Rs 50 lakh given to one of his firms’ account to enable visas for certain Chinese nationals working with a Chinese company. “In Punjab, there was a power project called the Talwandi Sabo Power Project, which was implemented with the help of a Chinese corporation. The corporation intended to send certain personnel to India in excess of the Ministry of Home Affairs’ limit. “They approached Karti in 2011 and he assisted it by accepting a bribe of Rs 50 lakh,” a CBI official claimed.
