New Delhi: Filmmaker Felipe Galvez Haberle makes his directing debut with the revisionist Western movie The Settlers. Among Felipe’s collaborators on the screenplay were Antonia Girardi and Mariano Llinás.
After making its world debut at the 76th Cannes Film Festival, The Settlers became the first Chilean film to receive the prestigious FIPRESCI Prize. This film was also Chile’s Oscar submission for Best International Feature.
Plot
A mestizo marksman from Chile named Segundo started the Settlers in 1893 on a horseback mission to recover and defend the state-granted estates of José Menéndez. A British soldier named MacLennan and an American mercenary named Bill are travelling with him on this expedition.
But as the administrative expedition moves on, Segundo has the terrible realization that the mission’s true purpose is to wipe off the native population so the settlers may lay claim to their territory. Using the Selk’nam massacre as its central conflict, The Settlers presents a visually striking and distinctive story that gives voice to the oppressed and the colonizers’ moral conflict.
After being assigned the mission of securing his holdings in the Tierra del Fuego archipelago from the people, the protagonist and his friends face a terrifying and horrific trip, as seen in the film’s trailer.
