After ‘digital’ strike, comes the highway blow: India to ban Chinese companies from road projects

In a big announcement, likely to impact Chinese companies in a big way, Nitin Gadkari today said that Chinese companies will be banned from road projects in the country.

New Delhi: Just days after putting a blanket ban on 59 Chinese apps, government is taking yet another step to punish China on the economic front, apparently over its misadventures at the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

In a big announcement, likely to impact Chinese companies in a big way, Nitin Gadkari today said that Chinese companies will be banned from road projects in the country.

India will not allow Chinese companies to participate in highways projects including those through joint ventures, said Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday.

Nitin Gadkari,

“We will not give permission to joint ventures that have Chinese partners for road construction. We have taken a firm stand that if they (Chinese companies) come via joint venture in our country, we will not allow it,” Gadkari told news agency PTI.

The minister also said that a policy will be out soon banning Chinese firms and relaxing norms for Indian companies to expand their eligibility criteria for participation in highway projects.

Plans afoot to force Chinese firms out of SMEs too

Gadakri also said the government will ensure that Chinese investors are not entertained in various sectors like Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

Gadkari said that foreign investment is being promoted but Chinese investors would not be allowed.

This would help realize the vision of Prime Minister, aimed at creating Atmanirbhar Bharat, he said.

Chinese apps banned

Last month, India banned 59 Chinese apps apparently over their suspicious data operation, suggesting that they were transferring data of users to stations outside India.

The apps were apparently belonged to some of largest Chinese companies including Alibaba, Baidu, Xiaomi and others.
