New Delhi: Union Home Minister and BJP leader Amit Shah would be frequently visiting the poll-bound West Bengal from January onwards ahead of 2021 Assembly polls.

Sources informed that Shah would be visiting West Bengal for a week every month from February. This was communicated by Shah in an internal meeting with the leaders of the state on his recent visit.

The senior party leaders in BJP said that there are two dates that are being finalised by Shah’s office for his next visit. While there is the possibility of him visiting the state on January 12 which is the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, the other date that is under consideration could be around January 23, the birth anniversary of Subhash Chandra Bose.

“Post January 20 is a possibility,” is what a top leader of the state said when asked about Shah’s next visit. Shah’s visit and the pressure on the state government because of his presence would grow intense, informed a senior party leader.

“He told us that February onwards he would be spending almost a week each month in the state till Assembly elections. His presence boosts the party cadre that is reeling under the oppression by the state for quite some time now,” stated a senior BJP MP from West Bengal.

Sources said Shah would be camping in the state for two days. The former BJP chief had launched an offensive on the Mamata Banerjee government for killing party workers and for political violence against opponents.

Shah has set a target of 200 seats in the elections for 294-member West Bengal Assembly. He has recently returned from a two-day visit to the state. West Bengal is scheduled to go for Assembly polls in mid-2021. The dates have not been announced yet.

BJP had stunned the Trinamool Congress in 2019 Lok Sabha polls as it wrested 18 parliamentary constituencies, coming up with its best-ever performance in the state. Post the historic Lok Sabha showing, the party considers winning upcoming Assembly polls as crucial and wants to send out a strong message to the opposition by winning the state.
