New Delhi: Nag Panchami, an auspicious day in the month of Shravan, is one of the rare Hindu festivals where serpents are worshipped.
The day is considered extremely auspicious as worshipping Nag Devta (Lord of serpents) is said to bring good fortune.
The Nag Panchami comes just 2 days after another popular Hindu festival – Hariyali Teej.
Today, the festival is being celebrated across the country, especially in Hindi heartland states like MP, UP, Bihar & others.
On the day, snakes were offered milk in and around Shiv temple and Nag Devta is worshipped like any other God. Many devotees also place flowers and milk near snake holes and burrows. People offer prayers to Lord of serpents and pray for the well-being of their family.
Devotees believe that Nag Devta’s blessings will save them and their families from any evil. Those suffering from Kaal Sarp Dosh are especially advised to do this Puja on Nag Panchami as it’s a widely held belief that Nag Devta will alleviate their sufferings or will take away the negative effects of ‘Sarp Dosh’.
In many parts of the country, people also observe fast during the entire day. Snake idols are also created at home for worshipping.
There is also a custom of purchasing artificial serpents made from silver, stone and wood.
Nag Panchami is a much searched topic on the social media today as many people are greeting fellow citizens on the auspicious day and and sharing messages.
