No more forced conversions in Uttar Pradesh, Yogi govt clears ‘Love Jihad’ ordinance

The ‘Love Jihad’ ordinance mandates jail term of 1-5 years with Rs 15,000 penalty for forceful religious conversion. For conversions of minors & women of SC/SC community, there will be jail term of 3-10 years with Rs 25,000 penalty.

New Delhi: The Uttar Pradesh cabinet on Tuesday approved the ‘Love Jihad’ ordinance, days after the proposal was sent to Union Law Ministry.

While passing the ordinance, the UP government said that more than 100 cases were examined before bringing the ordinance. State Cabinet Minister Siddharth Nath Singh said the ordinance was to stop unlawful religious conversions.

The ordinance mandates jail term of 1-5 years with Rs 15,000 penalty for forceful religious conversion. For conversions of minors & women of SC/SC community, there will be jail term of 3-10 years with Rs 25,000 penalty.

In cases of forced mass conversions, the ordinance provides for jail term of 3-10 years with Rs 50,000 penalty. If a person wants to perform marriage after converting into any other religion, they will need to take permission from DM 2 months before marriage, UP Minister Siddarth Nath Singh told media.

‘Love Jihad’ is a term coined by right-wing groups, under which youth of different keep their religious identity under garb and marry Hindu women. Later, these women are forced to convert to Islam.
