Sonia Gandhi-led Cong delegation meets President Ram Nath Kovind over Delhi violence

New Delhi: A Congress delegation, including interim President Sonia Gandhi met President Ram Nath Kovind on Thursday and submitted a memorandum pertaining to series of violent incidents in North-East Delhi.

Congress leaders meet President -

Gandhi was accompanied by senior leaders including former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, Ahmed Patel, Mallikarjun Kharge, Ghulam Nabi Azad, A K Antony, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and others to the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Reading out parts of the memorandum before the media outside the Rashtrapati Bhavan, Sonia Gandhi said that instead of taking remedies to diffuse the situation in Delhi, the Centre and the newly-elected Delhi government have remained “mute spectators” to the violence.

The party also asked the president to call for the resignation of Home Minister Amit Shah over alleged “abdication of duty” during the violence.

Manmohan Singh, in his remarks to the media, said the Congress leaders called upon the President to convey to him that what has happened in the last four days in the national capital is a matter of deep concern and national shame.

Yesterday, the Congress interim president also held a press conference in New Delhi over the matter and had demanded the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah alleging that the Centre had not done enough to curb the menace in the national capital.

Violent clashes erupted between pro and anti-CAA groups in parts of North-East Delhi on Monday, leading to widespread vandalism and arson for over three days.

The death toll in the violence rose to 33 on Thursday, according to hospital authorities. (ANI)
