UP: Posters of anti-CAA protesters put up again in Lucknow, bounty announced

The posters – labelled “WANTED” with the faces of anti-CAA protesters were put up by UP Police in Lucknow on Wednesday evening. The posters have declared them “absconders” and put out their names and addresses.

New Delhi: In fresh crackdown on anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protesters, the Uttar Pradesh administration has put up posters of those campaigned against the new legislation in state’s capital.

Posters with photographs of protesters have been hanged in Lucknow and a bounty of Rs 5,000 have been announced for any information on whereabouts of the absconders.

The posters – labelled “WANTED” with the faces of anti-CAA protesters were put up by UP Police in Lucknow on Wednesday evening. The posters have declared them “absconders” and put out their names and addresses.

Posters and notices have also been put up near the houses of the accused.

All the accused are reportedly from Thakurganj area of old Lucknow. The posters also have details and numbers of police officials so that information about these ‘absconders’ can be sent to them.

UP Police, Yogi Adityanath

The accused have been booked under The UP Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act, 1986. All of them were involved in the “violence” during the anti-CAA protests in 2019 and had been “missing” since.

The eight protesters are Mohammad Alam, Mohammad Tahir, Rizwan, Naib alias Rafat Ali, Ahsan, Irshad, Hasan and Irshad. They have been accused of vandalism during protests in December 2019 against the Citizenship Amendment Act.

Earlier also, similar posters of 53 anti-CAA protesters along with their names and addresses were put at cross-roads of Lucknow. They were supposed to pay fine for damage caused to property during violent protests.

As the CAA was cleared by Parliament on Dec 11, 2019, it triggered violent protests across the country. In Uttar Pradesh, about 23 people were killed in violent protests and arson.
