CWC 2023: Rohit Sharma breaks multiple records during his century innings against Afghanistan

Rohit’s inning against Afghanistan has become one of his most iconic innings as he broke multiple records en route to his 131.

New Delhi: The Indian skipper Rohit Sharma enjoyed a monumental day on Wednesday against Afghanistan.

Rohit scored yet another daddy hundred against Afghanistan in India’s second match at the ICC 2023 World Cup.

Rohit, after failing in the first match against Australia, came in the second match in order to regain his form for the rest of the World Cup.

Rohit scored 131 runs in just 84 balls before getting dismissed by Rashid Khan.

India went on to win the match by 8 wickets.

Rohit’s inning against Afghanistan has become one of his most iconic innings as he broke multiple records en route to his 131.

Rohit first broke Chirs Gayle’s 553 international records, Rohit hit a total of 5 sixes in the innings, which takes his total number of sixes in international cricket to 556 sixes.

Rohit is followed by Chris Gayle and Sahid Afridi in this list.

Rohit’s century against Afghanistan was his 31st ODI century, which makes him the player with third number of the most ODI centuries on the list.

The Indian skipper bested Ricky Points 30 centuries record and now is only behind his countrymen Sachin Tendulkar (49) and Virat Kohli (46) in the list.

Rohit also broke the record for the most number of centuries at the World Cup by scoring his seventh ODI World Cup hundred in just 19 innings. Rohit once again broke Sachin’s record of 6 ODI World Cup centuries.

Rohit’s list of accolades doesn’t end here. He also took only 63 balls to score his century and broke the great Kapil Dev’s 40-year-old record of a fast century at an ODI World Cup of 73, which Kapil Dev made against Zimbabwe at the 1983 World Cup.

Rohit, upon being asked about his accolades in the post-match conference, said, “It’s a special feeling to get a World Cup hundred. Really happy with that. Don’t want to think too much (scoring 7 hundreds in just three World Cups), and I don’t want to lose my focus. You need to make such things count. You gotta make it big. Some of it (the shots he plays) is premeditated. I let my instincts take over at times; sometimes, it really works well. It’s my job to make sure to get those starts, especially in run chases.”

Earlier, India defeated Afghanistan by 8 wickets in their second group stage match, to remain undefeated and moved up to rank 2 on the points table.

Skipper Rohit Sharma’s next challenge will be maintaining their perfect ODI World Cup win record against Pakistan, when he takes on the arch-rivals at Narendra Modi Stadium on Saturday, October 14.
