New Delhi: Granting a major blow to the world, five-time World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen, who has maintained his top position in the sport, announced that he has no intentions of defending the next world chess title.

The latter has donned the crown of world champion in a row for five years after nabbing it from India’s Viswanathan Anand in 2013.

According to a report by Chess24.com, Carlsen has forwarded his decision to the global governing body of the concerned sports FIDE.

While many are shocked by Carlsen’s announcement of dropping the Championship next year, those who have been following the game know well about the views regarding the tournament that he has openly put forwards in various podcasts and interviews.

Not Motivated Enough

While announcing his decision on his friend Magnus Barstad’s podcast, Carlsen had cited the reason in quite plain words stating, “I am not motivated to play another match. I simply feel that I don’t have a lot to gain, I don’t particularly like it, and although I’m sure a match would be interesting for historical reasons and all of that, I don’t have any inclination to play and I will simply not play the match”.

Views About Chess Title 

The 31-year-old has achieved the highest ratings in the chess tournament ever, though he known to be suspicious about the concept of a global tournament deciding the world’s best player.
