Section 144 imposed in Lucknow till April 5, amid chances of farmers’ protest

The local administration said that political parties, student organisations, or farmer unions might hold protests in the area and that will have an “adverse effect” on the current peaceful situation.

New Delhi: Uttar Pradesh government imposed section 144 of the CRPC in Lucknow till April 5 due to possible chances of farmers’ protests in the city. The local administration said that political parties, student organisations, or farmer unions might hold protests in the area and that will have an “adverse effect” on the current peaceful situation.

Lucknow Joint Commissioner of Police (Law & Order) Naveen Arora gave a statement on Monday evening saying that there is a strong possibility of the farmers’ agitation getting violent and can lead to a law and order situation in Lucknow.

Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) of 1973 authorises the Executive Magistrate of any state or territory to issue an order to prohibit the assembly of four or more people in an area. According to the law, every member of such ‘unlawful assembly’ can be booked for engaging in rioting.
