New Delhi: Shirley, the much-anticipated film starring Regina King, is almost ready to hit Netflix.
Shirley is a historical film that is based on the life of Shirley Chisholm, the first Black congresswoman in history. Chisholm began a campaign in 1972 to become the first Black president of the United States of America. The film stars many notable actors, including Lance Reddick, Terrence Howard, and Lucas Hedges, among others.
Plot
Shirley follows Shirley Chisholm as she strives to become the first Black congresswoman in 1968 and a candidate for president in 1972. The meteoric ascent of political rocket Shirley Chisholm is chronicled in the biography.
A “candidate of the American People” rather than a conventional politician, the inspiring and genuine Shirley said in her now-iconic declaration of candidacy address.
The film chronicles the life of a legendary political figure as she experiences the transformative, formative years of the United States’ modern era. As it delves more into Shirley’s life beyond her role as a politician and candidate, the film is both an uplifting and moving movie.
The film seeks to provide a unique look into the 1972 campaign and its behind-the-scenes discussions by relying on testimonies from Shirley’s relatives.
When and Where to Watch?
Shirley, a biographical film, will finally make its worldwide debut on March 22, 2024, on Netflix. It was originally scheduled for release in 2023. The movie has some violent scenes, some smoking, and harsh language (including racial insults), hence it has a PG-13 rating.
It has diversified its emphasis from mainstream to feature films and limited series inspired by or based on genuine tales, as well as fantastic films.

Cast and Crew
Regina King plays Shirley Chisholm in this biographical drama film, which was directed by John Ridley and stars Lance Reddick, Lucas Hedges, André Holland, and Terrence Howard.
The film also has a cast that is very talented, including extremely accomplished actors such as Michael Cherrie, Christina Jackson, and Brian Stokes Mitchell, amongst others.
Shirley is Regina and Ridley’s second joint production; their last collaboration was American Crime (2015). Participant Media and Regina King’s Royal Ties Production produced the film. Megan Coates designed the costumes, while Ramsey Nickell shot the film.
